What is a Full Body Skin Exam?

A Full Body Skin Exam is exactly what it sounds like. It is an opportunity for your Dermatologist, or Dermatologic P.A.-C to examine you skin from head-to-toe and look for any abnormal appearing moles or pigmented spots.

Doctor, dermatologist, hands examines a birthmark of patient. Checking benign moles

Skin cancer is a very real concern for many people. Especially those that have lived in sunny climates for long periods of time or who spend a lot of time outdoors for sports, recreational activities or work. Genetics can also play a role in your risk of developing skin cancer. Fair skinned individuals with light colored eyes are more at risk, as they have less protective pigment in their skin.

Sunscreens and sun protective clothing  can help to decrease your risk of skin cancer. But that alone does not eliminate all risk. During your Full Body Skin Exam your dermatologist can discuss topical treatments that can help repair your skin’s DNA and decrease the amount of pre-cancerous changes in your skin. There are also many laser and light based treatments that can improve your skin-health and the skins outwardly appearance.

Full Body Skin Exams should be performed annually to assess any changes in your skin and discuss treatment options. You should also see your dermatologist if you notice any new, changing or bleeding moles or spots.
