Platelet-Rich-Plasma (PRP) Therapy
Platelet-rich-plasma therapy is commonly used to promote tissue healing. Physicians often use PRP to encourage healing after head and neck surgeries, after orthopedic surgeries, or following a sports injury. In our practice, our top dermatologist in San Diego uses PRP as an anti-aging treatment for a variety of cosmetic issues, including:
- Fine lines and moderate wrinkles
- Acne scarring
- Coarse, uneven skin texture
- Sun damaged or hyper-pigmented skin
PRP is also used in hair restoration to stimulate hair growth and thickening in those suffering from thinning of the scalp or beard.
PRP with Collagen Induction Therapy
PRP therapy consists of separating the platelet-rich-plasma from your red blood cells. The platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is then added back into your skin. The PRP is reintroduced to the skin through small microchannels created by a sterile, single-use surgical-grade disposable needling device. Once the PRP is applied and absorbed into your skin, a healing cascade occurs that encourages the formation of new collagen and elastin. This increase in healing properties creates smoother, brighter, more youthful-looking skin.
Eclipse MicroPen™ Elite, our device of choice for Collagen Induction Therapy, is equipped with a sterile disposable tip with tiny oscillation needles. The MicroPen can be adjusted according to the patient’s skin condition and area of the body we are treating.
FAQs About PRP with Collagen Induction Therapy
How many PRP treatments are needed?
That will depend on you, your expectations, and the condition of your skin. Generally, we recommend a series of four treatments, spaced one month apart. However, even one treatment will make a difference in your skin’s appearance.
Is PRP with Collagen Induction Therapy painful?
There is some discomfort involved. In our office we use a topical numbing agent to reduce discomfort during treatment. There is no residual discomfort after. Any sensation you may experience is akin to a sunburn.
What will I look like after PRP therapy?
You will have some redness and mild swelling after your treatment that could last for 1-2 days. Once treatment is complete, you will go home with a mask-like layer of PRP on your skin, so you will want to give yourself 24 hours to “not look your best.” You will be able to apply makeup the day after your treatment, and most patients feel like they are able to cover any evidence of treatment.
Are PRP therapy results permanent?
The benefit of your treatment series is the creation of new collagen and elastin. However, you will continue to age and break down collagen and elastin. With sun protection, a good anti-aging skin care regimen, and occasional maintenance treatments you will be able to keep up with aging changes.
