Laser Hair Removal FAQ’s

Over the last two decades laser hair removal has gained in popularity. Women and men, of all ages and skin types, have treated virtually all body areas in pursuit of smoother, silkier skin.

Here are some of the most common questions patients ask when consulting for laser hair removal at our Del Mar dermatology practice.

What kind of laser do you use?
At Dermatology & Laser of Del Mar, we use the GentleMax PRO from Candela. GentleMax PRO is two separate laser in one. With is you can treat virtually all skin types safely, without damaging the skin.

Does it permanently remove the hair or just reduce it?
Laser hair removal permanently, and in many cases vastly reduces the amount of hair you have in the treated area. However, you may have some regrowth due to age, hormonal changes or medications.

Does it hurt?
With each pulse of laser energy you will feel a sensation similar to being snapped by a small rubber band. It can be annoying and uncomfortable, but is tolerable. Topical numbing creams, such as LMX 5%, may be applied to the treatment area 30 minutes before your procedure to make your experience more comfortable.

How many treatments will I need?
Generally we recommend 4 treatments at 4-8 week intervals with maintenance 1-2 times a year (or as the patient desires).

Can I go out in the sun after my treatment?
Yes, the treatment does not cause you to be more photo sensitive. We do recommend sun protection in order to prevent damaging your skin. We also recommend you do not come in for treatment if you are actively tan.

My hair is blonde, will it work for me?
The laser is attracted to the melanin content in your hair. It searches for contrast between your skin and hair if your hair darker than your skin you should see results. If there isn’t enough pigment in the hair to absorb the laser the results will not be as favorable is it can be for darker hair.

I get ingrown hairs in my beard, will it work for that?
Yes. The laser will change the quality of the treated hair. It will grow in softer and finer and be less likely to become ingrown.

I’m darker skinned (hispanic, middle eastern, carribbean) can my skin be treated?
GentleMax PRO’s dual wavelength is designed to treat all skin types safely and effectively. As long as there is a contrast (hair darker than the skin) we can treat!
