Wrinkle Reduction
Wrinkles or rhytides occur when the skin becomes lax. The degree of wrinkling that occurs is related to ones’ genetics including skin color and skin thickness, and increases with age.
Sun exposure is the primary cause of solar elastosis and premature wrinkling. Reasonable sun avoidance and sunscreen can help prevent most wrinkles. Topical skin care products such as growth factors, retinoids, vitamin C, and other antioxidants may decrease metalloproteinases, thus slowing the breakdown of collagen. Lasers, radiofrequency treatments, and intense pulsed light may reduce wrinkling and other evidence of photo-damage. These treatments include Thermage, Fraxel re:pair, re:store, and Dual resurfacing treatments, YAG skin tightening, as well as Smoothbeam and photofacial treatments.
